Use a good humidifier to keep moisture levels in the home up high. Also, having a number of plants around the house to provide some Oxygen and green life to the house is good.

Burt’s Bee Balm is really good too.

I fully agree to include a “moderate purchases” category. We call it “miscellaneous purchases,” and we also have a separate “fun money” category. Since last year we use the software http://www.YNAB.com, and we love it (excel is a great and cheaper alternative). Each month we have several moderate purchases, and if we would not include those purchases in our monthly budget, we would not be able to save as much.

Yes…things are tight these days. At my house we don’t buy anything that we can’t live without for the first 3 weeks of the month…we just put it on a list. Then we determine how much money is left over (by then all the bills have been paid), and pick the things on the list we can buy. It helps us not to overspend, and helps us manage the “i have to have it NOW” mentality.
